Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce images of structures in the body. Because ultrasound uses sound waves instead of radiation to create images, it is a safe way to image a pregnant woman or unborn child.
Ultrasound has many more uses then just imaging the unborn child. It can be used to exam the liver, kidneys, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, urinary bladder, uterus, ovaries, scrotum, thyroid, vessels such as the carotid arteries, leg venous and arterial imaging, renal artery Doppler, etc.
Ultrasound can even be used to guide a biopsy or aspiration.
What to Expect
You will be placed on a cart and the part of the body that needs to be imaged will be uncovered.
A warm gel will be applied to the area & the technologist will move the transducer around the area to obtain images from within the body.
Sometimes pressure needs to be applied to get the best image, this can cause a bit of discomfort at times.
Preparation for Exam
- Follow specific preparations for the specific exam you are scheduled to have.
- If you are having a biopsy, please bring a list of your current medications.
