Strength Training & Exercise Program (STEP)
Strength Training & Exercise Program (STEP)
The STEP program at OSF St. Mary Health and Rehabilitation consists of individualized resistive and/or cardiovascular exercises programs. OSF St. Mary has state of the art equipment which provides strengthening and conditioning to the major trunk, upper and lower extremity muscle groups. Exercise bicycles, treadmills, stair machines, rowers and elliptical equipment provide the stimulus for cardiovascular training.
All participants are individually instructed on all the equipment prior to its use, and then allowed to work independently at their own rate and during a timeframe of their choosing. An appropriate exercise program will also be designed for each participant based on precautions, limitations, restrictions and personal goals.
The goal of the STEP program is to allow individuals that were previously clients of physical or occupational therapy to continue their own exercise program independently at OSF St. Mary. Because proper techniques and safety are of ultimate importance, a staff member will always be present to monitor proper technique, provide exercise advice and consultation during the available STEP hours.
