Sam Lafferty

He wears many hats as a volunteer at OSF St. Mary Medical Center. You may have seen Sam Lafferty working at the Information Desk, or as a courier. Maybe, he has even helped out in your department. Sam has served as a volunteer at OSF St. Mary for five years.

"I volunteer to get out and get acquainted with the vicinity and to help in various ways," says Sam.

A native of Mercer County, Sam graduated from Viola High School and Brown's Business College. He retired in 1994 from Bituminous Insurance Co. out of Rock Island where he worked in various administrative and management level jobs.

When not volunteering, Sam enjoys sports, reading and occasionally traveling. Sam also used to coach Little League Baseball in Aledo for many years.

Sam is also the recipient of the "Phyllis Boergadine Award". Every year the Auxiliary presents the "Auxilian of the Year Award" to a volunteer or auxiliary member who has gone above and beyond in representing OSF HealthCare Mission and Values. The Auxiliary voted to change the name of the award to the "Phyllis Boergadine Award" to honor Phyllis for all of her years of service and dedication to OSF St. Mary Medical Center and the Auxiliary.

Phyllis was employed at OSF St. Mary Medical Center from March 18, 1962 - November 14, 2001. The majority of her 39 years was as Director of Volunteer Services, which in turn, made her very involved with the Auxiliary Board. Phyllis was attached to her volunteers - they were like family to her.

Phyllis lived the OSF Healthcare Mission, even after her retirement. She continued "to serve persons with the greatest care and love in a community that celebrates the Gift of Life." It is because of this that the Auxiliary is be pleased to present the "Phyllis Boergadine Award" annually to a volunteer/auxiliary member that lives and represents the Mission of OSF Healthcare.
